The debate began.
We developed an international program for the children who graduated from our school last month, and is designed to teach them a variety of subjects. The books the administration has decided to use come from a university press with strongly conservative christian views; so much so that all of the subjects are imbued with a prevalent sense of religiosity.
Regardless of what you believe in, I'm of the mind that you need to be trained to be able to teach about God. I am not. Furthermore, these children are six years old. How do you explain, let alone convince, a six year old that God made everything (in a language they are still learning no less)?
I found out today after my students asked me who exactly God was. When one of the students understood, he was able to explain in Korean to the other children. He then told me dead seriously, "God is not real," which was checked by an equally adamant, "No, God is real!" And so how do you tell children that both of their viewpoints are correct, let alone in a country where people believe there are strict wrong and right answers? Needless to say, this will be the most hotly contested class I teach at this school.
Did I mention they're six?
